Interesting Places of Visit at Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria Island is called the small continent as it is extremely different in its landscapes compared to those found in Europe, America or Africa. A 2000m mountain range lies in the center of the island with some intriguing canyons, deserts, tropical forests and soft sandy beaches.

Las Palmas

Las Palmas is Gran Canaria’s capital which currently has a population of 352,641 inhabitants. There is a lot of unique architecture showing the five continents’ influences through its colorful and quaint houses. The ambience in Las Palmas is always lively with the locals adopting a carefree attitude towards life and a great focus on enjoying life. There is a lot of colorful and varied culture through the many attractive festivities in Las Palmas. The local cuisine is varied and tasty with a lot of traditional as well as regional choices available. However, Las Palmas also offers international cuisine to cater to the many foreign visitors visiting this island.

Places of interest

The Gothic-neoclassical styled cathedral in Las Palmas is very ancient. It was only constructed after America was discovered. It is located at the town square Santa Ana which also showcases Archiepiscopal Palais and other Canarian styled architecture buildings. Another attraction in Las Palmas is the ancient quarter in Barrio de la Vegueta; there are many manorial houses with Latin-American styles which are more colonial in nature. Las Palmas, villas majorca locals appreciate all forms of art which can be viewed in the modern art museum in town which showcases many important contemporary art collections.  La Casa de Colón is famously known as the House of Columbus which showcases the model ships which Christopher Columbus used in his journeys to America.

There is also a Canarian Museum which houses a near complete exposition of the Guanches who are deemed as the Canary Islands’ first inhabitants.The Pueblo Canario provides a great site for local folklore performances in the surroundings of beautiful Doramas Park; a local and well maintained garden created by famous local artist Nestor Torre. This garden is specially designed to represent Canary Islands’ unique and signature architecture. The folklore performances are usually available on Thursdays and Sundays to allow the locals and visitors to appreciate the traditional cultures of the place.

There would never be a dull moment in Gran Canaria as there are many interesting sights to behold. There are different types of museums where different arts, history and contemporary works are displayed.
